MariaDB

Description

MariaDB is an Open Source RDMBS (Relational Database Management System). It was forked from MySQL in January 2009 in response to concerns about the stewardship of MySQL by Oracle. It is intended as a drop-in replacement for MySQL, providing compatible libraries and utility programs, and using the same remote access protocol.

microHOWTOs intended for use with MySQL should work equally well with MariaDB. For most purposes the only required change is to package names when installing parts of MariaDB itself (so, for example, mysql-server becomes mariadb-server, but libdbd-mysql-perl remains as it is). The names of commands and suchlike (for example, mysql to invoke the command-line client) do not change.
